Turkish women still dying over the right to divorce despite legal gains

This is a totally different example of women facing discrimination and violence. This is one of the many problems which shows us how important it is to protect women all around the world. There is a organisation called We Will Stop Women Murders, who has counted over 287 cases in 2013 of killing women over the right to divorce. The article that I found on this topic, introduces us to the one of many cases where the husband kills his wife due to the fact that she wanted to divorce him after he did some brutal actions to her. Serdar Gocmen and Muhterem Gocmen were married and according to the picture in the article they had one son. He would always beat her up, and he did not mind doing this even in public. Muhterem's sister Evcil speaks on the whole thing. Serdar obviously had a big control over his wife. When she got pregnant, he flung her down the stairs and she had a miscarriage. Evcil says that her sister searched months for lawyer who would fight for a restraining order and then also a divorce. She also received a lot of threats from Serdar's family, but she ignored them. At the end of everything Muhterem went missing for several months. The whole incident ended by Serdar killing Muhterem while she was working in the salon as a hairdresser by stabbing her several times. Muhterem's sister Evcil says that Serdar defied a restraining order just a day before he did this and threatened his wife. After all this happened to her family, Evcil now is fighting and speaking out with the help of We Will Stop Women Murders, about Turkish women dealing with this on a daily basis. She says that something has to be done about the women in Turkey. Events like domestic violence and also murders are happening every day around the world, and countries are not doing a single thing against it, which is obviously not right and it desperately needs to be fixed.

  2. It makes me sad to read about these things on the Internet. I cannot believe that some husband would do such a thing to his wife and further more that it is accepted as normal in those countries! In my opinion the media will help greatly to fight this issue as many people all around the world are protesting agains violence towards women. It scary to realize what those men can do without facing consequences. Great blog on this topic!
