Other Issues In Media and Society

The blogs I visited are very similar to mine and those are the topics I basically find interesting, too. The first blog I visited was about how are women portrayed in the media and it is connected with my topic which remains discrimination of women. The blog is interesting and has different articles with a lot of useful information.

The second blog I am suggesting you to read is this one about how women don't ever feel good about themselves and media basically lowers their self-esteem by putting only skinny models in their commercials and advertisements, so they try to be like them, which can lead to either health of psychic problems.

The third one is about cyberbullying and ways that people cyberbully other people, which can be useful for any one os us, because I think it is a very serious problem nowadays.

The next one is Veronika's blog which explains us the real versus media beauty of things over all. She gives an example of two girls, that never knew about each other, but had the same problem which was anorexia and bulimia. They got together, got well and healthy and founded an organiśation that is helping young girls go through the same problem, and it is really inspiring.

The last blog I recommend you to visit is this one about how media are reflecting on our generation of children and all the negatives that can go from this.

How I See It

My view on this whole thing is that I completely do not agree with the ways we, women are being treated. I have personally witnessed any discrimination of women itself. I only witnessed disrespect and bad treating, which was already unpleasant to see. I think all these things that I read during my research are simply messed up. Some say, it is more of a history thing and that it goes for years, so it
is not going to change so easily. But, I feel like we are far away from history, so majority of the bad thing that are happening against women should change. People always say it is a new age and nothing is like it used to be and we are not doing anything to change the old ways in this area. Mature countries are slowly changing their attitude for this case, for instance by having women at the same work positions as men. However there are still gaps. Women do not get paid the same and do not get treated the same as men do. Men are always suppose to be stronger, more independent and able to work better than women. The big problem we are witnessing is that it just has always been this way and it is not going to change as easily as we wish. If women are suppose to be completely free, without any commitment towards men, it will take a very long time to approach this. How women are committed to men we can see almost in every day life. While men are financially responsible and are suppose to provide goods to their families, women have to stay home and take care of children and households. This is always the way we are portrayed in media. Even advertisements on TV are basically showing us the same thing. Men would always promote TV's, cars or whatever is related to the expensive, modern items, while women will claim to show cleaning resources, vacuum cleaners or washing machines. In my opinion, this whole thing is ridiculous. I am pretty positive that every women feels the same way as I do. Every time I read or hear about something what happened to women around the world I get angry. The worst thing about this whole issue is, that we cannot change what is happening. There are organisations who are protecting women's right and try to help them in their hard situations, but it is not enough. We can only imagine how much domestic violence is going on right this second, and we cannot do a thing about it. I am very interested in this area, and always been. I am sure that if I will have a chance someday I will be a part of some organisation what helps women in their situations. I state that women should be loved and appreciated. Women are a reason why we all are here, and we cannot forget that. It is sad that men have troubles of understanding this fact and are struggling with themselves to do such nasty things to make themselves more important. This is the problem we should pay attention to more for sure and try our best to change the situation around the world.

For further research

I have read so many different cases and articles about this topic and about this problem. However the websites I would recommend to visit are the ones with the basic informations first. Just to know the basics, what it really is and what it consists of. I personally learnt so much about this problem by reading and listing them. I may knew about the issues that are going on in Middle East, Turkey, or Egypt for instance, but I never knew that there are more ways that women are being disrespected and discriminated. I also visited a lot of websites what are only made of stories, what happened all around the world, either they are current events or problems what are going on longer amount of time. There are also sources what only provide only information about women's rights and so on. I will put my links in a commentary, if you would like to read or explore them for further research.

What experts say II

This is an example how the discrimination is not seen as easily and does not happen in a direct or noticeable way. In general it is usually taught from yearly years and as a result the child grows up believing women are inferior to men. So that means that they learn from the early years that women are beings they grow up to become more vulnerable to inferiority complex. The same thing we can see in sports as well. Women who try to excel at certain sports such as boxing, weight-lifting, or material arts in general usually want to do so because of disliking the feminine role.

Discrimination is also the reason why you find bossy women at work, women who want to dominate men whether in the workplace or in the real life and women who might become lesbians. In all of these cases women is trying to escape from the role she believes to be inferior to the superior role.

What experts say I

Even when we realise, that discrimination of women is a very big problem, there are countries that do not. Countries like U.S, Canada, European countries, which have resources to fight against it. By resources I mean money, media that show what it really does and what is happening throughout the world. Countries like Cambodia, Kenya, or just basically most of the African countries do not even understand the concept of discrimination, although it is happening around them, too. Discrimination comes in very many different ways in different countries. For example in Turkey, if a woman is abused, there are no shelters or help for women in these dangerous circumstances. In Saudi Arabia, women are not allowed to drive. Yemeni women are some of the least empowered women in the world. In the parts of Middle East "honour killings" are still practised. These killings can be brought on by women engaging homosexual acts or sexual ate outside of marriage, or even dressing provocatively. If we would go to Middle East, we would only see women dressed in black habits, so they does not show any part of their body. These are some examples of what is happening, which is not okay, so we definitely have something to think about.

Turkish women still dying over the right to divorce despite legal gains

This is a totally different example of women facing discrimination and violence. This is one of the many problems which shows us how important it is to protect women all around the world. There is a organisation called We Will Stop Women Murders, who has counted over 287 cases in 2013 of killing women over the right to divorce. The article that I found on this topic, introduces us to the one of many cases where the husband kills his wife due to the fact that she wanted to divorce him after he did some brutal actions to her. Serdar Gocmen and Muhterem Gocmen were married and according to the picture in the article they had one son. He would always beat her up, and he did not mind doing this even in public. Muhterem's sister Evcil speaks on the whole thing. Serdar obviously had a big control over his wife. When she got pregnant, he flung her down the stairs and she had a miscarriage. Evcil says that her sister searched months for lawyer who would fight for a restraining order and then also a divorce. She also received a lot of threats from Serdar's family, but she ignored them. At the end of everything Muhterem went missing for several months. The whole incident ended by Serdar killing Muhterem while she was working in the salon as a hairdresser by stabbing her several times. Muhterem's sister Evcil says that Serdar defied a restraining order just a day before he did this and threatened his wife. After all this happened to her family, Evcil now is fighting and speaking out with the help of We Will Stop Women Murders, about Turkish women dealing with this on a daily basis. She says that something has to be done about the women in Turkey. Events like domestic violence and also murders are happening every day around the world, and countries are not doing a single thing against it, which is obviously not right and it desperately needs to be fixed.

Current events I

Why women are paying $1,300 more a year than men on the same exact products?

I found this pretty interesting article about women paying more than men on the same products. The products that the article talks about are mainly drugstore stuff like deodorants, razors and so on. It may be the smallest things, but this is also a way of discrimination against women. I personally do not understand why would people do this, even with necessary wheat like this. According to the president of the Female Engineered Marketing, Emily Spensieri, it predominately boils down to marketers knowing they can get away with it. She told for the interviews basically that they know women will pay more just to get it. Also women will always pay to get those necessarities, since they take care of themselves more properly I could say. Most of the women probably do not even realize that they get discriminated everyday over very small issues. I know I always get mad about how much money I spend on the beauty products, but I never knew that it was such a difference between these prices and I am actually pretty surprised. Do I think it is not fair? Yes, I do. I can get over the fact that I use my money to buy make-up and all things related to it, which may not be the most important thing in the world, but the fact that the same brand deodorant for women is more than $1 expensive than men’s is just bizzare. This article was released about two months ago, but I guess it is still a current problem, and it will be a problem for a long amount of time, until a bigger media does not bring it up as an important issue. It is for sure way, women are being discriminated, but it is not that main issue. It is just one of the additional and invisible issue.
